(PROGRAM NOTE: This album--especially the inclusion of the song "Blood Red Roses" was inspired by my folk show when it was on WDAS-FM Philadelphia in the late 1960s. Hal Willner, (Music Director of Saturday Night Live and many Hollywood films) who produced the anthology used to listen to my Sunday night show when he was a teenager growing up in Philadelphia. In the liner notes he credits my show--and the night I programmed a whole show of sea songs and specifically "Blood Red Roses" (Probably by Ewan MacColl) ---for turning him on to chanteys and other call-and-response, sailor songs.
Be careful. Sporadic use of lusty, salty language--hey, these are sailor songs! But a truly great collection of traditional songs by some of the best singers in the world.
